The Bard PowerPort:

The medical device referred to as the Bard PowerPort, is used to administer IV fluids, medicine, and other treatments. For patients who need frequent access to their vascular system, it is an essential tool. Before the invention of port/catheter devices, each treatment had to involve a fresh injection.

Since 1992, the use of port/catheter devices has grown rapidly due to the convenience they offer to patients and medical personnel. An estimated 5 million devices are implanted annually in the United States.

The device's issue stems from a defect in the design of the Chronoflex AL polyurethane material used to make PowerPorts. Research has shown that Chronoflex AL particles deteriorate with time, increasing the likelihood that PowerPort devices would fracture, migrate, or malfunction in other ways after being implanted.

Complications & Injuries

Power port catheter components have been linked to incidents wherein tiny pieces of the catheter's plastic tubing break off and get into patients' vascular systems. This incident has raised serious health issues and may even put patients' lives in jeopardy. There have been reports of port devices moving in within blood vessels or the body and causing a variety of negative consequences. Additionally, the way such devices are designed may play a role in the growth of infections in areas where the catheter has broken or deteriorated.
