What is Paraquat?

The most common application of the deadly chemical paraquat is as a herbicide in agricultural areas to manage weeds and invasive grasses. It wasn't until the middle of the 20th century that its usage as a herbicide became widespread, although being produced for more than 130 years.

Technically named paraquat dichloride, it is usually marketed under the brand name Gramoxone by its Swiss producer, Syngenta. As a Restricted-Use Product (RUP), approved for use exclusively by licensed applicators, it can only be purchased and used within the United States. Paraquat has no known home uses, and its very high level of toxicity is the reason for its RUP designation. One capful, or 2.5 grams, can be lethal to a human if consumed, and there is no known counteragent.

Paraquat & Parkinson's

According to a 2011 National Institutes of Health study, the risk of developing Parkinson's disease is almost 2.5 times, or 250%, higher among those exposed to paraquat.

If you work in agriculture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or gardening, you have undoubtedly encountered paraquat.

Parkinson's disease is a central nervous system illness that impairs mobility and frequently manifests as tremors, stiffness, or unsteadiness. Although there is no known cure for Parkinson's disease, several drugs can manage its symptoms.

Among the trade names used to promote Paraquat are Gramoxone, Para-SHOT, Parazone, Quick-Quat, Firestorm, and Helmquat.
